SAILING TECHNIQUES

Back & Fill works on boats with a prop directly in front of the rudder. It used the deflection of the prop wash by the rudder to kick the stern sideways.

You have to really blast the engine to get this to work, don't be timid!

Once mastered it means you will have control of the stern of the boat and can reposition it without moving too far forward or backwards which is very useful.

We do have a bow thruster on Fair Isle which makes things a lot easier but back and fill still works without so mastering this technique is key to anyone being able to manoeuvre a long keeled boat.
